Born in Poland, Filip spent the majority of his short adult life on academic research in physics, genetic engineering, and eventually vision science and identity infrastructure. As an immigrant in the UK and then the US he experienced the pain of being outside of the formal identity economy. While still at UPenn, this friction inspired him to combine his study of financial infrastructure with vision science and AI. After abandoning his graduate work he set out to start mati, a startup focused primarily with developing a standardized Unit of Legal Identity and offering it as a simple API to companies. They want to extend the concept of identity to a flexible string of attestations and formal documents to fit the needs to all people, from the gig economy to people who have never been issued a formal document. Mati currently has customers in countries on all continents, from 2 people on demand startups that verify users’ identity to large crypto exchanges and even Government institutions. They have offices in San Francisco, Mexico City, and Saint Petersburg.
